  【講演要旨】
        Social Relationships in Multicultural School Classes in Austria
                                  : the Case of Bullying and Racist Victimization

Schools play a major role for the social integration of immigrants into the new societies.    However, social relationships between students are not only positive. Bullying between pupils is     a frequently observed phenomenon. To get a deeper understanding in negative peer behavior in     multicultural school classes we conducted a series of studies according to three perspectives. (1)     We compared prevalence rates of bullying and victimization in children and adolescents from Various immigrant groups with native borns. (2) We investigated how victims from various groups Attribute negative peer behavior. (3) We examined differences in the evaluation and the perceived dynamics of interpersonal versus intergroup conflict situations between groups of adolescents.    In sum, 2123 children and adolescents (grade 4 to 11) participated in the studies. Results indicate    that immigrant children and adolescents are not at higher risk for bullying and victimization    compared with native Austrians. In most cases, victims of all groups attribute negative peer    behavior to personal characteristics. However, when conflicts are attributed to group affiliations    they are much more likely to escalate. These findings suggest, that not immigrant status per se,    but a salient group affiliation in a concrete situation is crucial for the understanding of negative    escalations of conflicts in multicultural contexts.
