During the later Edo period, the Japanese printing and publishing culture attained high levels of development and commercialization. In the more recent past, this fact has increasingly drawn the attention of scholars worldwide: it has been recognized as constituting an early forerunner of the modern “information society”, while at the same time the value of the related materials for socio-historical research has begun to be more thoroughly appreciated. Among the multifarious products of this thriving publishing industry, one-sheet prints called Jinsei dōchūzu (Maps of the Journey Through Life) as well as illustrated booklets with titles such as Zen’aku dōchūki (How to Journey through Life the Good and the Evil Way) which symbolically depicted the life course as a journey through a landscape that, while being filled with obstacles, also had a “goal”, became fashionable from around the middle of the 18th century. Nearer to the Bakumatsu period, so called risshin shusse sugoroku, pictorial race games depicting the way to making a career or having success in life, also came into being and played important roles in the commoners’ lives. Through an analysis of the contents of some of these materials, I would like to discuss the existence and terms of the commoners’ views of success and upward mobility despite the social system being a feudal one with a strict hierarchical class structure designed to keep everyone in their place.
