Towards a naive sociology: how children make sense of their social environment

要旨

The social sixth sense: the ontology of a naive sociology. Most (westerner?) psychologists tend to describe social cognition in mentalistic terms: once you know the beliefs and the desires of a person, you can predict/explain her behavior. This talk will question this paradigm by showing that even young children, not yet experts in theory of mind, are nevertheless able to interpret their social environment. There are notably able to understand social relationships, rules or group categories. In conclusion, a recent fMRI study with adult participants will also be presented. It shows that different cerebral networks seem to be involved in “mentalistic” versus “normative” predictions.
